The Dream Bank

I started off life in a different way than many.
I was rich, but not of money, I didn't have any.

What I had were dreams.

I dreamt of being a pilot, but ended up in glasses.
I dreamt of being a marine biologist, studying sea grasses.
I dreamt of flying space ships to other stars.
I dreamt of inventing rockets that would take us to Mars.

People laughed, scoffed, and I surrendered these dreams.

None of them were impossible, just impossible for me.
To everyone that knows me, I'm part of the ordinary.
Those I love can't fathom that I might do the spectacular,
Because I'm just Dan, in their every day vernacular.

Each dream given over to this, another withdrawal.

Those we love often feel a need to keep us in check,
Because they fear we might leave them behind, a speck?
Never quite believing in the accomplishments of those we love,
It's just John or Jane, no angel from above!

What happens when our dream bank is empty?

The less I have to look forward to, the older it makes me feel.
When you're a younger soul, the whole world's a new deal.
It's easy to imagine doing anything, so much time awaits you yet,
But when you're at middle age, you'll take what time you can get.

It's so easy to give in, give up on dreams.

But when your account runs dry, what is life then for?
Take advice from one who's learning, swim the dreamer's shore.
Never give up anticipating more to live to do,
Because when you have no dreams left, there's no heart left in you.

Dream big, dream small, but dream forever more.

One of those revelation moments in life hit me today. I can just see us, all with a bank of  anticipation, and if we let the joy, dreams, and hope go away, then suddenly we ARE old, with no hope left, and empty. As long as we have things to look forward to, and loved ones who will share them with us instead of "keeping us in reality check", then we have hope and purpose in living, a reason to smile and go on.

Tree House Nights

Late in the evening, the music plays low,
There's a special place my love and I used to go.
We called it the tree house, because of it's feel,
And moments spent there were sweet and surreal.

Just a balcony off a small apartment, shaded by tree branches.

Stars would peek and twinkle through branches,
And at the right times, the Man In The Moon also dances,
In a space behind the leaves, a corner of the eye scene.
Two chairs, a wooden table, visions in between.

Warm summer nights, candles behind hurricane glass aglow.

Tree House, I miss you, you know.

The last place I lived, in the summer, the one summer we had there, this was the center of the place. At least for us. The walls were brick, and we were between two rows of buildings along the  courtyard, rows of three storied buildings with balconies, a small patch of sky along between.  Airplanes Twinkling like UFO's as they made way across the night skies in numerous travels to distant lands. My brother lived with me there, he would sit out at night playing guitar, or better yet the blues on harmonica. (He is really good at that.) Or Saren & I would sit out listening to music and  talking...I loved it.

Commentary Fairy

A muse of a special nature,
And quite grand, I think, in stature,
She delivers what all poets crave,
Recognition of how hard we slave,
O'er words of wit and beauty,
Hoping to write a cutie.

I think she might have just snuck in,
Invisible, deciding who should win,
Words of encouragement so dear,
As any poet should hear.

Yes, I think I see her translucent flight,
And so I think I'll say goodnight.

Wait, I think I've a new comment to write!

Snowflies Dance:

A cold New Year's in Madison, Wisconsin,
When the Great Blizzard of '99 blew in.
At my mother's house by the lake,
With my new Love for goodness' sake!

Snowed in three days.

In the dark, windy, howling night,
Out the wall to wall window, a spectacular sight.
Roof peak lamp over the yard shines,
And swirls and eddies falling in sparkles and shines.

Looking for all the world like diamond colored fireflies.

Catching the light with twists and turns,
Tiny sparkling prisms with a beauty that burns.
Dancing over the lake, and under the giant willow tree,
Over the pier and winding into the drifts I see.

Snow as deep as the waist of a six foot six inch man.

The frozen lake,
Snakes of white snow drifting across,
Like a sea of pearlescent frozen glass,
Out in the yard, kids give the puppy a toss.
Little Joey disappears in a swirl of white,
Only to burst up in a moment of free flight.

Falling back into disappearance.

Across the lake,
The orange lights of the resort towers softly glow,
Window lights part of this winter show.
I wonder if the guests are snug and warm?
My Sweet Baby and I are watching the diamond swarm.

Curled up in the wicker chair with candles,
Watching the Snowflies Dance.

The power was out, and it was a 30 inch snow storm over two days. The New Year's date that lasted a week, My then new Love Lady Saren and I snowed in with my whole family on New Year's night, 1999. It sure was pretty, though!

Galveston's Secret

What's up, Sis?
What is this?
I was sound asleep!
Shhhh....not a peep!

It's hard not to giggle!

Out the window on a summer's night at one,
The three of us in search of secret fun.
Little sis, overnight friend and me,
Sneaking out to be free.

Destination: beach!

Barney's old black-primered Chevy Impala ride,
Rickety thump for a midnight ride.
Out of Houston in the dark we dash,
Not a thought nor one bit of cash.

Texas highway rolling by fifty miles under full Moon.

Slip into Galveston, driving past the bay.
Beach houses rolling back the other way.
Up on pilings like the playhouses of fantasies,
Above the sands and rolling sea.

Pull down onto the sand in darkness.

Moonlit sands and white tops turned silver,
Cascading rhythm and rolling water.
Camp fire ringed and talking late.
Time to leave, we couldn't wait.

The Impala stuck in sand!

Desperate measures were called for,
It took two four wheel drives with chains and a roar,
Finally we made it out,
Said our thank-you's with a shout.

Low on gas, running on fumes.

Trade in pop bottles for the fuel,
Slip on back before Dawn's rule.
Slide in the window and a mighty fright,
Mom's up on the couch, has been half the night.

It seems the police want the overnight girlfriend.

She didn't tell us she'd run away!

And we thought we'd been out for a secret adventure! We were just spending a harmless night on the beach, Talking and enjoying the freedom of it all. My sister's "friend" had snuck out telling us she'd had permission from her father to stay the night. The Boys in Blue came looking for her, and when Mom told them we were all in bed sleeping, well all they found was the vacant pillows....and when we returned from our gallivanting in Galveston, well let's just say that the secret was out...summer 1978.

Mississippi Thumb Ride

The night is dark, lonely, leaving home.
Jobs are scarce, searching is a cause to roam.
Money's tight, leave before morning's light,
Praying, searching inside, hoping to get it right.

Am I anywhere near the right road?

Standing alongside the highway,
Traveling lightly in my own way.
One suitcase, sleeping bag, sign.
Corinth, Mississippi, next in line.

Leaving Beloit with my thumb in the breeze.

Catch a semi going my way,
Long rolling miles and polite questions today.
Hit Memphis with the morning's light,
It's pouring rain, and I'm a drenched sight.

Duck under an overpass, I have nothing but time.

Wet German Shepherd, slinks up with a whine,
I share my shelter, it's all quite fine.
Make the best of a hungry gray dawn,
My new friend Chopper, we must move on.

Hitchin' through the back country in a panel van.

Pull into Corinth on a hot summer's eve,
Just a friend's idea hiding up my sleeve.
The dog and I looking for a name,
Folks that don't know me, it's all the same.

My friend sent me to her relatives in tough times.

Kind hearted folk gave me a place to stay,
I was looking for work almost every day.
Junior & Tina my saviors for awhile,
Caroline & Bobby, with a kind smile.

Rex and Marquita a story all their own.

Schooling under Job Service in electricity,
Thirty dollars a week was all I'd see.
Chopper took off while Junior was hunting a squirrel,
He heard that gun and turned tail in a whirl.

The time came when I had to leave.

Folks can only do so much,
But I'm thankful for a touch,
Of hospitality and time.
They gave it freely, never asking for a dime.

Thumbing for Dallas at twenty three, looking back over my shoulder.

Sometimes the road can be lonely,
Solitude's quiet reflection the only,
Companion you can find.
Echoes of those days still flash through my mind.

To those I don't mention, you are not forgotten.

Theresa's folk remembered, and a Tennessee crossing or three.

When I was twenty two or twenty three, times were damn hard. The economy was in a recession almost as bad as the Depression. At least that's how it felt, like someone had to die before you could
find a job where I was from. My friend Theresa sent me to her family in Mississippi looking for work. I never found it, but I got to go through Residential Electrical school at the Mississippi State Junior College in Corinth. The trip was really something, hitchhiking a thousand miles. These people have my eternal gratitude for the time they gave me shelter. Dallas is another story...for later.

Running The Rock

Times, places to remember,
Never forgetful, not ever.
Steve Jackson and I had a wild ride,
And I tell the tale with pride.

I wonder if Lewis & Clark had as much fun.

Start off the day in Janesville with Mom's canoe,
A 20 mile run with nothing better to do.
Rock river current runs south here,
We took it in stride, water, paddles, and beer.

Carry the boat around three dams.

Riding on the water all day,
Paddling this and that way,
Laughing as we dodged wakes,
Exertions with paddles for goodness sakes.

The orange canoe our friend today.

Tree lined river with water slightly green,
Sunshine, river smell, breezes, boaters scene.
Exploring the branches, running with the river current,
End up at Riverside Park in Beloit, the whole day spent.

Tie the end of the canoe to a roller-skate.

It's a time to remember,

Running the Rock

In The Silent Darkness

There is a place in my mind,
It's inspiration's intention is kind.
Hoping to find a light to shed upon the world,
I search here, secret visions whirled,

Looking in every corner.

Late in the night, when breath is slight,
Sounds faint, dispersed, almost no light.
There is a quiet place, gentle breeze,
Sitting under the stars with hands on knees.

Listening to the under current.

Rushed is not possible in this dimension,
Solitude, preventer of dissention,
The Universe contained behind my eyes,
Hoping for a vision of something wise.

Turning over thoughts like stones in a garden.

Emotion's tides are gentle here,
A quiet place that knows no fear.
These tides, however, run deep,
A secret that there is no need to keep.

Praying for insights, guidance, wise words.

I wander in the wider world that waits inside,
So that I may share my visions with warm pride.
Will my transmission be received? I know not.
With a sigh, resigned to the poet's lot.

Searching in the Silent Darkness.

Inside.

Dream City

A place, sunset rules it.
The breeze blows strongly at your feet, as you quiet your soul,
Walking the path in silence, listening to the music of the water.
The labyrinth winds through cascading grace.
Every where you turn, as far as the eye can see,
Fountains and lights, cascades and running sheets,
Water dances, playing games with gravity, motion, and lights.
concrete, stone, running continuous sheets overflowing,
Twisting, turning, droplets, mist, spray, every description,
Water in every form and flow pattern, it's heady rush.
In the very center, sits a pool, reflecting the stars and the newborn Moon.
Floating on a lily pad, the Queen of the Angels of Light dances,
The water music lightly touching her gossamer gown,
Cooling her translucent until her motions are bared to the heavens,
As she weaves the great Garden Spell.
Four winged unicorns grace the compass points of the pool,
Liquid blue eyes staring and razor sharp horns of rose coloured ivory,
Ready to take flight at the pinnacle of magic.
At the end of the endless waters, the mind labors to transcend,
Ending boundaries before the holy light of God's dawn begins,
And the garden appears.
At the edge of a pool, the ancient trees stand tall,
Glowing orbs of paper lamps glowing soft yellow in boughs,
Fairy lights everywhere.
Gossamer winged couples flit here and there,
Tiny hooves dance on rope ladders and bridges between miniature doors,
Ballroom carved into ancient wood so tiny.
Minotaurs drum a continual beat at set points along each path.
Centered under each ring of trees, the beautiful flowers ring the harvest gardens,
And the fall is awaited, times of plenty to come.
Shooting stars flash and twinkle through the tree tops,
And arch over the starlit pools and Moon glow graced waters.
The sky begins to lighten in the east,
And the fading visions of Dream City cast off,
Driven to Twilight Dimensions with each breath,
Each moment nearer to awakening.

Light and Coffee have won the day.

Until tonight.

I've often had fantasy visions of designing and building a city where folk live in harmony with nature and where water ways transport them through tree covered avenues, homes built part of the Earth, yet beautiful and bright. A central feature of such a place, there is a huge park where fountains and waterfalls of every description are graced with glowing colored lights dancing in the waters. I often wonder if time could stand still in such a place. I wonder how far in our past this vision existed,
or where in the unknown future it might lie. Crazy? Fanciful? Maybe so, maybe no.

What a wonderful poem Dan. I like to think that it's a vision of the future. A place where some day I might accidently stumble upon it and be enthralled by all I see and then I'll know that all those times when people scoffed at me for my beliefs that I was right after all and then I could rightly say, yes.... I believe...*S*

Three Musketeers, We Liked To Think

High school. Words that evoke terror and joy,
Times that were hard and wonderful, for a boy.
I never fit in school, different as I was,
Ridiculed or laughed at just because.

Understanding can be a luxury in life.

Other misfits quite like myself,
Two friends very different from me on the same shelf.
We hung together, learned to get along,
Listened to the same bands, sang the same song.

Queen's "We Are The Champions" belted on the radio.

Ace of Spades, Ace of Hearts, Jack of Diamonds,
Nicknames from cards for three friends.
Ideas and ideals discussed with vigor,
Dreams of homeroom angels shared with rigor.

Drawing super hero comics, learning to drive.

Biking all through Madison, State Street was alive,
Wandering the East Towne Mall, imagination thrives.
Camped out at night listening to rock in an old house,
Rules and society blues, luck we would grouse.

All things pass in time.

We all grew, spread apart, changes came.
But the memories of glory years, they belong in frame.
Three gypsy geniuses in different styles,
Sharing a camp fire of the mind for awhile.

Riding buses, bikes, and walking everywhere.

We thought to change the world, make it a better place.
Dreams that we shared with much of the human race.
First dates, first times, craziness that shines,
But we grew up and the world changes to the nines.

Maybe it's time to dream again.

They're playing Boston!

more that weren't. Art, Eric, I have good memories of back then because you guys were around. That's something I'm thankful for.

Samantha Joe's Ride

Tiny puppy surprise,
Little husky-shep with brown eyes,
Coat half black and snow white,
Whining and hungry into the night.

Learning to live in a human world.

Potty training, newspaper or outside,
Learning so quickly it's a reason for pride.
Tricks with a cookie up in the air,
Catch it still flipping with a doggy grinning stare.

Watch 'em, Sam!

Guarding the household or the car,
Not a person could get very far.
Just eight months and hit by a Beetle mobile,
I couldn't belive it was real.

Carried home in a sled with care by down cast honor guards.

Running around with a cast on your leg,
Never stopped being cute when you decided to beg,
Snitching Nono's hamburger in silent surprise,
It sure took awhile before he got wise!

Have a sip of coffee with Mom in the morning?

Bye-Bye are the magic words carefully said,
Tail wagging ready from backside to head!
Treed every kid up and down the street,
And for once, the dog catcher knew defeat.

How did a dog get so smart?

Heaven help us if you played frisbee!

Samantha Joe, or Sammy Joe, was the smartest dog I've ever seen. It was positively uncanny. It is one of the biggest shames that she never had pups, but who was to know when you fix 'em so young? I think everyone loved that dog! I wish sometimes that we could go back to places in time for a visit, relive some of the better moments. She passed from this world in 1982. May Dog Heaven give rides in cars.

Nothin' Goin' But Corn Growin':

Charlotte, Honey,
You remember back in '59,
Adelle graduated,
Went to Prom,
Down at old Descatil High?
I think a board popped loose,
On the barn that day.
Aaron, Sweetheart,
I remember like it was yesterday.
Charlotte, Honey,
You remember back in '55,
Adelle said she was too old for tire swings?
I think a board popped loose,
On the barn that day.
Aaron, Sweetheart,
That one I remember,
I was scared and I cried.
I didn't really know quite why.
Charlotte, Honey,
You remember back in '62,
Adelle said she was off to Chicago,
Got accepted at the college there?
I think a shingle flew,
Off the barn that day.
Aaron, Sweetheart,
I remember.
Adelle saw the tears in my eyes,
Said "I got to, Mama,
Nothin' goin' here but corn growin' ".
Charlotte, Honey,
You remember back in '65,
Little Jimmy was born in Chicago,
And we couldn't afford to go?
I think the windmill froze up that day.
Too many hail stones in the blades.
Aaron, Sweetheart,
I remember I cried myself blue.
I couldn't hold her,
I couldn't hold my granbaby.
Charlotte, Honey,
You remember back in '83,
Jimmy went and graduated,
From Inner City High,
Adelle sent us that nice picture,
Him in the prom suit,
Pretty date and all?
I think the rope swing branch,
Broke out of the old Oak that day.
Aaron, Sweetheart,
I cried something terrible that day.
He seemed so young.
Charlotte, Honey,
You remember in '98,
Jim had that slick new laptop computer,
In the lawyer's office?
I think the barn caved in that day.
In fact, it clean knocked that big Oak down,
The one I carved your name in Honey,
After I kissed you on VJ Day.
Tree mightn't have made it,
But I still mean forever, Love.
Aaron, sweetheart,
I cried so hard,
He said "I have to, Mama,
Nothin' goin' there but corn growin' ".
And Adelle just looked away.

The two pale ghosts,
They stood chatting,
There along the country road,
Watching Adelle cry,
Watching the sad look on Jim's face.
The family cemetery was already gone,
All it's headstones moved to town.
As the bulldozer knocked the old farmhouse down,
Adelle reminisced,
She'd never remembered so many houses,
It had been open fields,
Bright blue sky,
Birds and wildflowers.
Little Tommy Praxton,
Used to live a mile down the road.
He'd died in 'Nam.
Now there was a gas station,
A mile down the road.
The old Descatil High,
That was a dark-windowed pile,
Just empty old cracked bricks.
No swings left on the cast iron pipe frames,
Weeds growing up in cracks in the parking lot.
Adelle watched the yellow Caterpillar dozer move.
The last thing to go was her old playhouse,
The one where Tommy Praxton,
Snuck in and gave her her first kiss.
She cried hot tears,
As the wooden door splintered,
The one her Daddy had made,
On her fifth birthday.
There! My God, there!
There was a wreath of dried flowers...gone.
Her Daddy had put fresh flowers on the door,
Every year in April on her birthday,
"Happy Birthday, April Adelle!"
Adelle stared at the machines,
At the naked black Earth.
Where Home had been.
At the developer's billboard sign,
"Merry Hollow Townhomes -
From the 150's..."
Jim wondered,
At all the old farm buildings,
All in such disrepair,
As he drove his tearful Mom,
Back to the big city.
How peaceful,
He thought,
The countryside was.

Charlotte, Honey,
I think Adelle was wrong.
Everything happens here now,
And there ain't a stalk of corn growin'.
Aaron, Sweetheart,
Adelle was crying today,
When she told me,
She couldn't get home.
I'm worried about her, Sweetheart.
Which way is home, Sweetheart?
Charlotte, Honey,
I hate awful to admit it,
But I think I've lost my way,
I think we're lost, Sweetheart.

Joe put on his hard hat,
And began pouring the concrete.

An Analog, uhm, I mean pen-first creation.... Where I live, everything is a construction zone. Farms are dozed over, and banks and gas stations and houses and town homes and discount stores are
going up everywhere, filling in all the open fields. Where they're not building there are signs announcing projects to come. I wonder at the stories of the places that vanish. Who played there? Who fell in love there? I go back to Wisconsin, drive past my grandparents' place once in awhile, it's getting a mite - decrepit - They closed the Catholic High, the factory where Nono worked 44 years, the one where Dad worked 53. The church where Noni & Nono were married, Where Mom & Dad were married, where I was baptized, it was saved from destruction by being converted to an angel museum. Funny, Mom hated the priest who painted over the sky full of angels on the ceiling when she was a little girl. Every time I drive in the country, the barns are older and the paint more faded.
There are less windmills, less silos, less railroads. Less peace and more pace. Less Home.

Very nice Daniel, I too have seen it come and watched it go, Nothin' Goin' But Corn Growin': sort of gave me a feeling of, 'been there, done that' in a pleasant way, even though the memories we cherish sometimes seem to be wiped away without regard, such is life I suppose, well done.
