The Honor Among Clouds...
It's an old and faithful thing,
These flying volunteers.
It started with cloth and grit in World War Two,
The day after the war started,
In fact most people hardly know.
Civilian Airmen took their own planes to the skies,
Spotting submarines off our coastlines,
Sparrowhawks hunting tin sharks,
Piper Cubs and old Jennies alike,
They fiercly defended home.
They still volunteer among the clouds,
Or in old buildings on little airports,
Out among the dust and obscurity.
Still.
How many cadets went on to lead,
Officers and judges,
And every other working thing,
The stuff of civil duty,
A nearly-forgotten thing.
If your plane goes down,
They will find you.
If your house is flattened by a hurricane,
They will take the pictures that rebuild you.
If you want to learn of aviation,
They will teach you,
Or your sons and daughters.
The Silent Service,
Those barely heard of or known,
There when the chips are down,
Or when the skies are up.
Say hello to the Civil Air Patrol,
A golden thing under a blanket of dust,
A wonder that America barely remembers it has.

Vortices…
Vortices…
Great spinning energy,
Red flame flecks like spinning burning leaves,
Bits of paper in an orange-lit cyclone of mind,
Special places where the fire is a healing burn,
Cracking open the shells of rebirth,
What is a disaster for the old is an usher,
So get ready to dance at the center,
Spinning,
Glowing,
Burning,
Whirling light in the darkness,
Who will be be left standing?

Author’s note:
Every once in awhile I get flashes of insight, and they can be just subconscious imagery. I had a flash of this today. Like the place I was in was at the center of the fires of change, protected, just the place for an audience to ride it out.

Artists’ Card Project – Ace Of Hearts
Working on a project with 54 other
artists, mostly from the Madison, WI area, to create a deck of cards. I
picked the Ace of Hearts as my card. Here’s the final artwork version.
Keep looking up,
Dan

He flashes through clouds and vapors,
Ducking birds on the wing,
Scarf whipping in the prop-wash,
A race with Cupid to be won,
For there in his sights lies the most tender target,
A beating lonely heart,
Wishing and hoping for just that one shot,
The one that ends it all,
In a flash of ever-after joy,
He tips the stick forward and dives for it,
Goggles gleamingly clear,
He pulls the trigger on love,
Raining it down from on high,
A bubble that can’t be burst,
Not even by the light of day.

Boxtrolls…
Boxtrolls…
I loved this movie! The artwork is right up my alley.
Some of the subject matter should be kept at least pre-teen and above,
but the art and heart are adorable. 9/10
Pass the popcorn.

Prodigal Poet...
Prodigal Poet...
Pages have lain bare,
Wanting for ink,
Thirsty for soul dreams,
Lonely for mind-candy's hallowed release.
More than six years pass by,
Finally my pen is back to hand,
In the wee hours,
Absent the glow of electrons and keys.

The Pear Tree Circle Mural Project...
The following mural was painted on the wall & ceiling of our 2nd floor at our townhouse in very early 2003 by me:

The mural was painted over about three weeks ago as we are in the process of selling the town house. The upstairs area is now a stark, sterile, neutral white. The wall to the right of the mural had been painted a warm, tomatoey red and had black and white Elvis portraits and album covers in frames hung on it. The lamp in the stairwell is an imported Italian light fixture of an angel flying with a staff of wheat in one hand and a yellow-green lamp in the other. Like most Italian art, it is a touch risque'. The ceiling had the sunset fading to a deep indigo and then to black with stars and a comet on the ceiling. All the painting was done on a scaffold made of six two-by-six boards laid on the top stair and a ladder rung, and tied together.
